  Have some great news for those of us using Amigas and Windows boxes on
a network. There is now a beta release of Samba for the Amiga!

  Samba is file server software that allows you to export filesystems from
a (usually non-DOS) host for use on a DOS or Windows based client. This
means you can put your Amiga hard drives on a network and access them from
your Windows PCs and WinNT workstations!

  Best of all, Samba is free. And the SMB client software (that you run on the
DOS box) is included with every copy of WinNT or Windows for Workgroups.

  What you need:

    AmiTCP 4.x. -- You should have it installed and running and be able
  to ping between the Amiga and Windows boxes before you attempt installing
  Samba.

    Some kind of Windows TCP/IP implementation and socket library. WinNT
  includes this, WfW people should get one of the shareware WinSock
  packages from the simtel ftp sites. These are a pain to configure, get
  someone network-wise to help with this. WinNT's is pretty straightforward,
  but having a NetAdmin handy to answer your questions is always good.
  (Note: I'm using NT, so I'm not sure if you actually need a WinSock
  under WfW.)

    A Network. Ethernet works nice. You could even go SLIP via serial
  port, but this is gonna be DOG slow.

    The Samba package. Get it from any Aminet site (like FTP.NETNET.NET,
  pub/aminet area). Samba is found in comm/tcp, and the filename is
  samba-amiga.lha.

    I don't own a PAR myself, but I see no reason why this could not be used
  to allow PC Lightwave boxes to write IFF frames directly to a PAR on an
  Amiga.

    Be careful, this is very beta software. The nmbd daemon has a few memory
  pointer problems. It tries to read and write to location 0 periodically,
  and whenever a browser asks about available filesystems. Nothing fatal,
  but annoying for those of us that run Enforcer. I haven't figured out yet
  if you can run the smbd without the nmbd.



    But it works! And on NT (and probably Win95) you'll even get long
  mixed-case filenames! Whoo hooo!
